Day 5: After escaping the touristy black-hole that is Kilkenny, we arrived in Cashel, a small town whose claim to fame is The Rock Of Cashel, a large fortified Castle/Cathedral. It’s really impressive in person, and is covered in crows, so clearly no expense was spared for the atmosphere. The rock is on a high hill and we managed to get a break in the rain and some pretty stellar views of the surrounding country-side/sunset. This was really cool. Also, again, it was a cemetery (we bought tickets to a cemetery).

Day 4: Part 2:
After Powerscourt, we drove down through the Wicklow Mountains (pics to follow) to Glendalough (pronounced glen-da-lock) where an old monastery and round tower is located just south of the lake. It turns out a large number of Ireland’s famous landmarks were religious sites, that also means that nearly all of them are also cemeteries. It feels more than a little weird to walk around a (still used) graveyard and read historical notes on guide plaques. Also pictured is the upper lake.

Update time. These are from the Powerscourt Estate Gardens which are located on the same property as our fancy hotel. I guess this was the last big Garden Estate in Europe before that stopped being a thing in the late 1800s or so. It’s January so nothing is in bloom, but it’s still impressive, with a great view of sugar-loaf mountain.

Checked in to the Marriott in Maui. Nice digs.

Oahu Day 2

First thing we did was go to Pearl Harbor. The Arizona memorial was booked for the day. Apparently the tour companies like to scalp the tickets. We saw the Bowfin and the Missouri instead. Both interesting, one is really big. The other is really small. We then drove around to the north and east sides of the island. Saw some nice beaches and some impressive geography. Pictures of all that will go up once I’ve got something approaching a real internet connection.

Arrived in Honolulu. This island has the craziest airport. Big update later tonight.

Arrived in Phoenix early… then sat on the taxiway for 40 minutes. Not impressed so far, US airways.

Finally Packed

Final Packing is complete, and we’re getting ready to go to sleep so we can get up in 5 hours so we can board a plane and sit in a small seat for 10 hours. Vacations are fun!
